Competiton Report - Monday 27 August 2007
Event 5, the UK Nationals Competition saw 7 entries and 1 new flyer trying out on the course for the first time.
Conditions for the day were worse they had been all weekend, with a fresh wind blowing down the course from early on, but this varied throughout the day.
Alan flew first putting in a good 37 leg run with his B06 running a Neu 1409 motor with the Sergey slim prop. Dick put in a good run of 34 legs backing up with a maximum landing bonus. Mark flew a 35 leg opening round but started the first leg with a motor into course followed by a cut on the return to base A. Missing the landing bonus didn't help either. Nigel, stepped up and stuck in a banker starting score of 41 legs, backing it up with a good duration and landing score.
Georges opening round saw his Surprise 11 really screaming into the course, the Hacker 6L on 6S with a slim prop surprising the assembled F3B flyers with the straight line speed and noise of so called 'silent flight'. Unfortunately the speed didn't translate into a high leg count , adding a cut at Base B with another cut on the return to try and get the base hurt his score, leaving George with a 33 legs flight, although a good duration and landing pushed him close to Dick. Tony flew a nice 32 leg opening round, with his S-11 moving really well. A missed landing dropped him down the order though. Mike was the only 7 cell flyer and his 22 leg opening score was good considering the blustery conditions for the lighter model.
Round 2 was a little more eventful. Alan opened round 2 with a 35 leg score, which included a motor on into course. Dick backed up his round 1 score with another solid 33 legs. Mark switched models due to an aileron horn failure on his Hacker powered B06 to his Plettenberg powered B06, improving the first round score with a 38. Swapping models meant the flying order rotated with George flying just prior to Mark. Pushing his S-11 to the limit, Georges wing failed in spectacular style with a very loud bang. The fuz rocketed earthbound just in front of Base B while the remains of the wing fluttering down wind. This was a real shame as the course computer indicated 36 legs with enough time left for an easy 4 legs or possibly 5 legs. A post mortem revealed that the D-box had opened up at maximum acceleration blowing the wing. Nigel squeezed out another leg to put in 42, with the obligatory good duration and landing. Tony remained consistent with another 32 legs but improved his landing. Mike mirrored his first round score with another 22 legs.
Round 3 proved to be 'routine' with improving scores. Nigel took the third round with another 42 legs flight and hence the 2007 title. Alan swapped from the Neu 1409 to the Neu 1412 motor in search of more speed. Mark flew a 40, and Alan 39, with a 20 point and 30 landing respectively meant Mark led Alan into round 4 with just 5 points. George switched to his S-14 and flew a 37 leg flight, Dick dropped back a lap from round 2, and Tony improved by the same 1 lap from round 2, both backing up with the maximum landing bonus. Mike elected not to fly the last two rounds.
With the first place decided, the final round would decide the other places. Alan flew a 40 leg round with a good duration and maximum landing bonus. Mark flew a 39 with the 5 point difference meaning that even with a zero motor run duration, he couldn't overall Alan. Adding a 20 point landing bonus meant Mark slipped to third. With the title already in his pocket, Nigel pushed and made a 43, the best LiPo legs score in the UK (and possibly the world??) this season. George slipped back from his third round score with 35 and Dick improved his with 34. Tonys final round was aborted due to his motor failing to start in the climb after 22 legs which was traced to a phase wire becoming unsoldered from his controller. Tony managed to land without damage to his model despite the failure being at low altitude.
New flyer Jos Mouris fetched along his Ariane V10, on 10 Grepower cells and a Hacker B50-6S. First ever F5B course flight saw a reasonable flight of 23 legs with the inevitable cuts and motor ons. Following a prop swap his second flight saw 25 legs with a cut, but the Ariane definitely had the speed. Jos also flew 2.4GHz and the system didn't show any incompatibilities with the course equipment. Hopefully Jos will become a regular competitor and he will be able to improve his scores.
